What is MTG Foundations? – A New Era of Standard
What is the Magic: The Gathering Foundations set? Let’s have a look at it!
Magic: the Gathering Foundations rounds out 2024 on a high note. The amazing introductory experience gives us what many believe to be the quintessential Magic: the Gathering experience. Now that we have all these new players, where do we go from here? Here are all the changes and everything on the horizon for MTG in 2025.
With WPN Premium Preview Events taking place between January 17th and 23rd and the full release on January 24th, we mark our return to Innistrad with Innistrad Remastered.
We have been spoiled with some amazing remastered sets in recent history. Time Spiral Remastered and Ravnica Remastered were huge successes and really brought nostalgia from some of the best settings in MTG history. Now we will be able to revisit Innistrad with a curated collection of the best cards and synergies from the three visits we’ve had to the plane already.
Just like with Time Spiral and Ravnica Remastered, we’ll see old treatments of cards from Innistaad’s history, highlights of some of the most iconic characters, and a host of reprints for all our vampire and werewolf fans. We’re even getting back one of, if not the most, iconic vampire in Magic: The Gathering: Edgar Markov makes his grand return in the set as well as the special “Headliner” card.
Welcome to the Ghirapur Grand Prix! Releasing February 14th and with a prereleases February 7th, players will engage in a death race across three different planes to win the coveted Aetherpsark.
With the creation of the Omenpaths, now anyone can travel through the different planes. Now, we have teams of each colour combination fighting it out for the grand prize. Not only that, we will be visiting an entire new plane, one that has been mentioned but never had a dedicated set.
Of course, being a set focused around a race, we have plenty of vehicles and even more new racers. There are many new characters, but also fan favourites making a comeback in new forms.
A decade ago, Magic first visited Tarkir. We were given colour wedges, dragons, clans, and now all this is coming back in one great bundle. All of the best features are returning in Tarkir Dragon Storm. New dragons are going to be introduced, but there are also older dragons coming back along with the three colour clans.
We can’t have a Tarkir set without the return of Sarkhan Vol. Speaking of returning characters, we have the beautiful Dragonfire showcase frame, for Sarkhan and the epic return of Ugin.
For the first time ever, Final Fantasy will be collaborating with Magic: The Gathering. We will see the largest collection of Final Fantasy characters and elements ever featured in a single game, including artwork from all Final Fantasy titles, including all mainline titles from Final Fantasy I to Final Fantasy XVI.
We have already seen some artwork spoiled for Lightning, Army of One, Emet-Selch, Unsundered, and Together Forever featuring Tidus and Yuna, among many more. This set is more than just cards, it’s about celebrating decades of iconic characters and legendary stories from one of the most beloved franchises in video game history. This set is more than Magic the Gathering, it’s a way to experience the world of Final Fantasy like never before.
When magic first began, it was a setting based in very traditional high-fantasy. Over the course of Magic’s history, we have seen just how Wizards of the Coast expanded and explored just what fantasy means. We’ve expanded through time travel, exploring different planes of existence, and even great cosmic beings that exist between these planes in the Blind Eternities.
Now we are returning, or rather, entering the Blind Eternities, in Edge of Eternities. This is a very space fantasy, science fiction focused set. We will be seeing several new tribes, planets, items, and environments – alongside one confirmed familiar face.
With an unconfirmed release date, all we know so far is that we are getting a dedicated Spiderman Universes Beyond set. With a standard release schedule from what we’ve seen previously, we can expect Universes Beyond Spiderman to release somewhere around September or October. This is also the first of many Marvel Universes Beyond Sets.
In addition to Spiderman, there is UUB. UUB is Unannounced Universes Beyond set. This will also be released in Late 2025, and with the expected Spiderman Release, we can expect this set to release in November or December in 2025. With this release coming out in late 2025, the Return to Lorwyn set has been pushed to the start of 2026, likely January or February.
