What a Tease!
The first photo we were teased with was a stunning rendition of the iconic scene where Kefka poisons the water supply of Doma to bring a swift end to the siege of the city.
This is the first time we truly see how evil he is and how much he disregards life. Many oppose the poisoning of the water, but it isn’t enough to stop Kefka, and it kills nearly every man, woman, and child alike. For many, this is where they truly saw Kefka for what he was, fully establishing him as the villain.
Based purely on the artwork, I wouldn’t be surprised if this ends up being a reskinned version of Toxic Deluge—perhaps “The Poisoning of Doma” or even “Sweet Music” for a darker take on the name. If not a reskin, I would bet this is the artwork for a board wipe in the set.

Next, we have the iconic lead of Final Fantasy XIII, Lightning!
Based on the artwork alone, this may actually be the art for Lightning herself. If we were to speculate on her abilities, there’s a chance they could incorporate the Lightning Bolt spell into her card ability. She’s definitely going to be a Red creature, though a Boros color identity would also suit her character.
Just playing around with mechanics and flavor, I believe she’ll have the Flash keyword, and on ETB she’ll deal three damage to something. This would represent her speed in-game and serve as a fun nod to “Lightning (bolt).” It may not seem very powerful, but perhaps she can be flickered or has an ability to flicker herself.

For those who haven’t played Final Fantasy 7… ahem… spoiler alert…
This card is Murder. It’s a Murder reprint. What else could it be. As much as it breaks my heart to see this scene, the artwork really is just stunning.

“Remember… remember us… remember… that we once lived!”
One thing I’m really happy to see is that it seems the MMO Final Fantasy XIV is also getting its proper representation. Emet-Selch, one of the greatest antagonists in video game history, makes his grand appearance, and he looks magnificent in Amaurot.
Is it not painfully obvious? We are quite big Final Fantasy fans at Fanfinity.
Once again, going off artwork, game design, and knowledge of mechanics alone, I’m hoping Emet is an Orzhov or Mardu creature with the ability to bring allies back from the graveyard or banish allies and then play them. This would fit incredibly well with his implied final scene in FFXIV: Shadowbringers.

There’s so much I’m looking forward to in the Final Fantasy x Magic: The Gathering Universes Beyond set. I can’t wait to see Chocobos with the new Saddle mechanic, Cid the Artificer, and all the different airships. I’m also excited to see how they’ll incorporate Limit Break and magic. There are so many possibilities and the release date, June 13th, can’t come soon enough! If you want to watch the announcement video, you can see everything for yourself here!
