The MTGCU? - Magic: The Gathering Cinematic Universe Is In The Works

We are finally getting the Magic: The Gathering feature film and television series we’ve all been waiting for! Magic: The Gathering parent company Hasbro Entertainment has set in motion a plan to create an expansive cinematic universe based on the iconic trading card game.

Industry Veterans

The news comes to us after an initial live-action feature film was greenlit by Legendary Entertainment. The announcement marks the first ever live action feature length adaptation of Magic: The Gathering – great news for anyone still waiting on the animated Netflix series that was announced to be in development a few years ago.

What’s great about the announcement is it is not just any studio helming the production of the series. The Magic: The Gathering cinematic universe is being produced by Legendary Entertainment – the studio behind the recent film adaptations of Dune, Pokémon: Detective Pikachu, Watchmen, and Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight.

Legendary Entertainment are veterans when it comes to film adaptations of popular fan favourite IPs.

We’ve seen Legendary Entertainment create such immersive stories and settings from titles with relatively little lore, like with Detective Pikachu, as well as some hopeful snippets we’ve seen from the upcoming Minecraft movie.

We’ve also seen just how much of an epic a story they can tell using extremely well-developed source materials such as Chrisopher Nolan’s Dark Knight Trilogy.

I have high hopes for the Magic: The Gathering Cinematic Universe as we’ve seen just how great Legendary Entertainment has handled visual effects in films like Dune and Interstellar – also an integral part to bringing the Magic experience to the big screen.

I look forward to seeing the power of the Planeswalkers, epic battles, and giant spells really come to life. There are so many amazing settings and planes we could visit, the possibilities are endless.

Endless Planes and Genres

One of the most exciting aspects about the Magic: The Gathering adaptation are all the possible planes they can visit, and the variety of genres the feature film and subsequent television series could have.

We could have your classic high fantasy in Lorwyn or Dominaria. We have the Innistrad-themed vampire and werewolf settings. We could even see the inter-planar level threats of the Eldrazi, or a cross-planar Mad Max-inspired race based on the most recent Aetherdrift set.

When March of the Machines debuted, we heard many fans call it the Avenger’s Endgame of Magic: The Gathering. We saw the culmination of many planes and storylines gathered into one epic finale against the Phyrexians, and the planes of existence were forever changed after the war. There are so many directions to explore and I look forward to seeing where exactly the show will go.

What do you think will we see?
